If you know me at all, you know I HATE cold weather. I absolutely would move to a warmer state just to avoid winter. I don’t like snow, ice, wind, or anything really below about 60 degrees. I actually keep my thermostat in my house at like 73! So when it comes to winter maternity sessions, I have to be creative to minimize our time freezing and also get an amazing gallery with lots of variety. The answer is doing a split indoor/outdoor studio session.
These indoor/outdoor sessions are really popular in the winter months for maternity clients who don’t really have a choice when to schedule. Their baby is coming, so moving the session to spring or summer is not an option. So instead, we begin the session inside, and end at a nearby park. This gives a lot of variety in the final gallery, and also keeps us toasty for most of the hour.
Ashley and Gerard were just one week away from their due date when we met for their maternity session. We began with some dreamy white back-lit shots. I just love this look, especially for maternity! Gerard is a race car driver, so we made sure to incorporate some of their special items from home including a custom onesie. Ashley made a quick change, and we were off to the park for the outdoor portion.
Now as much as I dislike shooting in the cold, when it’s a beautiful snow, I suck it up! This session has to be one of my favorites because of the perfect light snow that fell throughout the session. Ashley’s choice of colors made her outfit really pop against the white, and we even got their fur baby to do some action shots for us with snowballs. It was such an amazing session all around. I am so glad we all braved the cold for these photos. And of course, I am super excited to meet their little guy in just a few short days.
